The Republic of Rathnelly
The “Republic of Rathnelly” is unique. Residents of Rathnelly (click for map), bounded by Avenue Road, Poplar Plains Road, MacPherson Avenue and Poplar Plains Crescent, have a strong sense of family and community and maintain their own ratepayers association.
The neighbourhood is an interesting mix of old and young, professionals, artists, writers and academics, some of whom have lived here for decades. Every year or so there is a neighbourhood fete knows as “Rathnelly Day” which gives residents the chance to hold yard sales, orgainize events for the children and socialize at a cocktail party, dinner and street dance.
Nearby, Brown School, a well-known public elementary school (with English and French immersion programs as well as a community center) has long attracted families to Rathnelly. Several well-known private schools such as the Mabin School, Royal St. George’s College, Upper Canada College, The Bishop Strachan School, Branksome Hall and De La Salle College are also within easily accessible.
The Summerhill and Dupont subway stops are within walking distance and bus service (No. 5) is accessible on Avenue Road. Shopping, restaurants, theatres, parks and ravines are within easy walking distance. Rathnelly has its own park at “The Pump”.
This is a truly special neighbourhood in the heart of midtown Toronto.
